ABOUT PPP
Evidence-based psychological treatment.
The Primary Psychological Program (PPP) provides structured, evidence-based psychological treatment for people with work-related psychological injuries. It is designed to address psychological symptoms early, reduce functional impairment, and support a safe, sustainable return to work and daily life.
Psychological injuries are complex. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and adjustment difficulties affect how people think, feel, and function — and without the right support at the right time, symptoms can deepen and recovery can stall. PPP exists to change that trajectory.
The program pairs a dedicated assessing psychologist with a consistent treating therapist, providing structured assessment, targeted therapy, and regular reporting across the full recovery journey. For referrers, this means clinical accountability and clear, coordinated communication at every stage. For the people in the program, it means being genuinely heard and supported by a team that stays with them throughout.
Delivery is in person or virtual, making the program accessible to anyone in Australia, with appointment times designed to reduce practical barriers to engagement.
Structured assessment and reporting
Formal psychological assessment at intake, midpoint, and discharge — with clear reporting that keeps referrers, treating doctors, and insurers informed throughout.
Evidence-based therapy
Treatment draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and work-focused psychological therapy, matched to each person's clinical presentation.
Consistent team throughout
The same psychologist and therapist remain involved for the duration of the program. Consistency builds trust — and trust is what makes psychological treatment work.
Co-ordinated, interdisciplinary care
PPP coordinates with treating doctors, insurers, and other providers to ensure everyone involved is working from the same recovery plan — reducing fragmentation and supporting faster progress.
WHO IS PPP FOR
For anyone with a psychological injury.
PPP is designed for people with accepted psychological injury, across all schemes, industries and occupations. The program is also suitable where psychological injury has developed alongside or following a physical injury. Referrals are accepted at any stage of the recovery journey.
Primary psychological injury
Including anxiety, depression, PTSD, or adjustment difficulties arising from a work-related event
Where specialist input is needed
Cases requiring careful clinical management and formal reporting.
Barriers affecting physical recovery
People whose psychological state is preventing progress in physical rehabilitation
Any industry, any occupation
Including first responders, healthcare, corporate, retail, transport, and frontline workers
HOW PPP WORKS
A structured, informative pathway
From referral to recovery — clear, coordinated, and clinically led.
1
Referral & rapid intake
Following referral, participants are contacted within 48 hours to schedule their initial clinical assessment. The intake process is straightforward and designed to reduce any anxiety about getting started.
2
Comprehensive clinical assessment
A qualified assessing psychologist conducts a structured initial assessment, establishing a clinical baseline, identifying treatment priorities, and producing a formal report for referrers and treating doctors.
3
Tailored therapy begins
A consistent treating therapist delivers regular evidence-based therapy sessions using CBT, EMDR, or work-focused psychological therapy — matched to the person's presentation, goals, and pace. Sessions are delivered virtually, at times that work for the participant.
4
Progress reviews and reporting
Structured reviews are conducted at the midpoint and end of the program, with formal reporting at each stage. Referrers, insurers, and treating doctors receive clear updates that reflect actual clinical progress — not just attendance.
5
Discharge and long term planning
At program conclusion, a formal discharge assessment is completed and a clear plan for ongoing wellbeing and sustained return to work is provided. Where further specialist support is needed, warm referral pathways are in place.
WHY PPP WORKS
The clinical approach
What distinguishes PPP from standard psychological treatment within a compensation context is its end-to-end structure. Many people referred for psychological injury receive sporadic, uncoordinated therapy with unclear goals and limited reporting. PPP addresses each of these gaps deliberately.
Assessment is formal and repeated, not just an intake conversation. Therapy is evidence-based and matched to clinical presentation. Reporting is structured and timely. And the same clinicians stay involved throughout — because in psychological treatment, the therapeutic relationship itself is part of what works.
PPP was nominated in the Innovation in Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative category at the PIEF Conference.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Addresses patterns of thought and behaviour that sustain anxiety, depression, and avoidance

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Highly effective, evidence-based treatment for trauma
Formal reporting at every stage
Structured reports at initial assessment, progress review, and discharge
FAQ
-
Understanding psychological injuries involves recognising their distinct nature and impact on employees compared to physical injuries. These injuries, often invisible, can arise from workplace stress, traumatic events, or accidents. They encompass a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD, profoundly affecting an individual's mental state and daily functioning.
Unlike physical injuries, psychological harm can be less apparent, making diagnosis and treatment more challenging. This complexity requires a nuanced approach to treatment that addresses not just the symptoms but the underlying causes and individual experiences associated with these injuries.
Psychological injuries necessitate a compassionate approach that goes beyond traditional medical treatments. Recognising their impact on an employee’s overall well-being, effective care must be holistic, considering the emotional, cognitive, and social aspects of the employee's life. This comprehensive view is crucial for fostering a truly healing environment.
-
Early identification and intervention in cases of psychological injury are essential for effective recovery. Identifying these issues promptly can prevent the escalation of symptoms and the development of more severe mental health conditions. Early intervention leads to more successful treatment outcomes, shorter recovery times, and a faster return to work, reducing the overall impact on the employee's life and work. This proactive approach is key in managing the complexities of psychological injuries, ensuring that workers receive the right support and treatment as early as possible.
