Primary Psychological Program

Recovery from a Psychological injury is complex – we’ve developed an evidence-based, early identification and intervention program aimed at screening, assessment, treating and supporting claimants through the recovery process.

What is PPP?

The Primary Psychological Program (PPP) provides structured, evidence-based psychological treatment for individuals with work-related psychological injuries. The program is designed to address psychological symptoms early, reduce functional impairment and support safe, sustainable return to work.

Who is PPP suitable for?

PPP supports individuals who:

  • Have an accepted primary psychological injury claim

  • Are experiencing conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma or adjustment difficulties following a work-related event

  • Require structured psychological treatment to support recovery and return to work

  • Would benefit from coordinated assessment, treatment and reporting to guide stakeholders through the claims process

  • May have complex psychological presentations requiring specialist oversight

The program is suitable for participants across all industries and occupations, including first responders, healthcare workers, corporate staff and frontline personnel.

How does PPP work?

  • Participants are contacted within 48 hours of referral and scheduled for an initial clinical assessment.

  • An assessing psychologist completes structured assessments and reporting, while a treating therapist delivers regular therapy sessions.

  • Therapy is delivered using evidence-based interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and work-focused psychological therapy.

  • Participants complete an Initial Assessment, Progress Review and Discharge Assessment with formal reporting at each stage.

  • Insurers, employers and treating doctors are kept informed through regular reports and case conferencing to align recovery plans.

  • The same clinicians remain involved throughout the program to support engagement, build trust and optimise outcomes.

  • Understanding psychological injuries involves recognising their distinct nature and impact on employees compared to physical injuries. These injuries, often invisible, can arise from workplace stress, traumatic events, or accidents. They encompass a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD, profoundly affecting an individual's mental state and daily functioning.

Unlike physical injuries, psychological harm can be less apparent, making diagnosis and treatment more challenging. This complexity requires a nuanced approach to treatment that addresses not just the symptoms but the underlying causes and individual experiences associated with these injuries.

Psychological injuries necessitate a compassionate approach that goes beyond traditional medical treatments. Recognising their impact on an employee’s overall well-being, effective care must be holistic, considering the emotional, cognitive, and social aspects of the employee's life. This comprehensive view is crucial for fostering a truly healing environment.

  • Early identification and intervention in cases of psychological injury are essential for effective recovery. Identifying these issues promptly can prevent the escalation of symptoms and the development of more severe mental health conditions. Early intervention leads to more successful treatment outcomes, shorter recovery times, and a faster return to work, reducing the overall impact on the employee's life and work. This proactive approach is key in managing the complexities of psychological injuries, ensuring that workers receive the right support and treatment as early as possible.
